Action Settings

Updated Apr 19, 2012   //   Reference

The Operations and Outcomes which can be set on an Action are determined by the Action Settings for the Portfolio.

In contrast to Tags, which are easy for users to add ‘on the fly’, the Operations and Outcomes which can be applied to Actions are pre-configured and intended to be reasonably broad.

This is because:

  1. completing some Actions (i.e. setting an Outcome) causes changes such as setting Status Tags or setting Filing dates;
  2. experience has shown that when it was made easy to create new Operations and Outcomes, users created ever more detailed categories and their Portfolios became confusing for them and especially for their new users;
  3. users accessing a number of different Portfolios would have to remember each one’s special setup.
If you want to provide more detail about an Action, then you can do this with your own Tags or by adding Notes to the Action.

Presently the Action Settings are fixed by Hawk IP. Please send us some feedback if they really don’t fit your needs, and we’ll see about changing them.

Different IP Types

There are different Action Settings for each IP Type of the Family to which the Action belongs (or the Family to which the Right belongs to, if the Action relates to a Right), and different Action Settings for Rights and for Families.

The Actions Settings for each IP Type can be viewed from the Settings->Action Settings page for that type, by clicking on the View buttons in the image below:

Relationship between Outcomes and Status

When an Action is completed, an Outcome is set by the user. Outcomes can be configured to change the Status Tags which are applied to the Family or Right to which the Action relates, so that the Status of a Family or Right changes automatically when an Action is completed – for example completing a File Application Action might change the Status to Filed.

For more information, see Outcomes.
