What are the issues with importing Patent data?

This post will explain what known issues there are with the importing of external Patent data into the Dashboard, using the Import tools.

The importing of Patent data is extremely complex and at the time of writing this should be considered Beta functionality – i.e. not completely rock solid – for the following reasons.

  • Returning back through the Import process (clicking on previous tabs) can break the import. Start again if this happens.
  • Some granted Patents are not recognised as such, for example translations made to validate granted European Patents.
  • Many number translations are not done correctly. Even if the publication number is recognised and the Family found from it, the Dashboard can fail to work out the Application number from the available data, preventing a successful import.
